Children & Dentistry
Dentistry for children is a changing rapidly. This is not just about brushing teeth and limiting sweets. There are so many predictors of health that can be seen by the dentist if they know what to look for. Tongue position, breastfeeding, nasal breathing, oral posture, swallowing difficulties, and sleep issues are just a few critical areas that will affect the child’s growth and quality of life in both childhood and as an adult. These are areas that need to be evaluated early in childhood and treated appropriately to facilitate proper growth and development. Correction early in development will stimulate the palate to expand, decreasing the probability of dental crowding, a long soft palate and obstructive sleep apnea. This is just one example of what dentistry for children can offer. The key is recognizing the problem early and knowing what options are available. This is one area where a “wait and see” approach will have irreversible consequences.
